The
Salmon River Canyons
"RIVER OF NO
RETURN"
No
phones, no traffic, no hassles - just the splash of oars and
paddles or the roar of rushing white water as you ride the
Main Salmon river through deep arid canyons and relaxing on
pristine white sand beaches. This is the ideal rafting
trip for families as well as those wanting the best Idaho
outdoor vacation, combining just the right amount of exciting whitewater,
swimming, games and wilderness. A Salmon River Canyons
whitewater vacation is full of
possibilities and wonder as you journey through 4
geologically diverse canyons of the Salmon River and ending
in Hells Canyon.
The
Main Salmon River is the largest un-dammed river in the lower 48
states. The nature of a free flowing river gives the Canyons an abundance of
pristine white sand beaches, affording the highest quality
camping of any river we know. The
deep canyons frame in the clear western night sky to seemingly
join the heavens with the canyon rim. Wake to the smell of
freshly brewed coffee or the feel of the soft morning sun on
your face at the breakfast table.
The Main Salmon river has
cut its way through thousands of feet (and millions of years) of
geologic history. You'll pass through steep granite and
metamorphosed volcanic gorges which will open to roomier
columnar basalt formations. The diverse landscapes provide
habitat to an equally diverse collection of animal and plant
life, including deer, golden eagles, bighorn sheep, river otter,
cougar, and bears all common in the Canyons. We pass by
crossings used by Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce Indians in
their flight from the U.S. Calvary in 1877. We will also visit
Chinese pit dwellings, abandoned homesteads, and old mining
claims. You might even challenge yourself in exploring deep into
the Pullman Mine at the confluence of the Salmon and Snake
Rivers.
When you reach the confluence with Snake River in Hells Canyon
you have the option of a jet boat ride 25 miles up thru the Hells
Canyon National Recreation Area to Pittsburgh Landing for a
short but breathtaking shuttle out of the heart of Hells Canyon.
During your Idaho rafting trip we will challenge the largest
free-flowing river in the lower 48 states, float the two deepest
river gorges in North America, and traverse three states.
